FX Renews ‘Shōgun’ For Two More Seasons – ScreenHub Entertainment

Shōgun is one of the most talked about shows of the year to date. Thanks to stellar reviews and positive word of mouth, Shōgun is seemingly everywhere and is FX’s most-watched show of all time. But the future of the series was always uncertain, as the series was an adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name and what we’ve seen encompassed that story, so there was no more source material to pull from. But that doesn’t seem to stop the Disney-owned FX network, which has renewed Shōgun for two more seasons.

FX has struck a deal with James Clavell’s estate to produce two more seasons set in the universe of Shōgun. While the show has been renewed for more seasons, time will tell if we actually get them, as the writers’ room may fail to come up with a meaningful story to justify the two additional seasons. But assuming the creative team, which will include original Shōgun showrunners, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, alongside executive producer Michaela Clavell and star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada, can come up with a new story for these characters, then it’s all systems go for additional seasons. Sanada recently signed a deal with FX to return as Lord Toranaga on the condition that FX comes up with a meaningful story only.

By making additional seasons, FX will enter Shōgun not as a limited series at the Emmys, but as an ongoing drama and the network had to make this decision before May 9th, which is the deadline for submissions.

I do worry that doing more seasons of Shōgun will echo the later seasons of Game of Thrones, where the showrunners started creating their own material once they passed author George R.R. Martin’s published goods. But if the whole new stories can be as good as season one, then I’m all for it, as Shōgun was certainly a well-written and produced show.
