There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Lord Voldemort, the chief antagonist to Harry Potter in the books and films, ranks among one of the best villains of all time. He keeps good company, generally sharing lists that have the likes of Darth Vader and the Joker on them. But while he is a great antagonist, he’s not per se the best character among the Potterverse’ villains. There is another and while he’s not as menacing as Lord Voldemort (yet), I do think Gellert Grindelwald may, in fact, be a better character than Tom Riddle ever was.
You may not know who Julian Glover is off hand but there’s a good chance you’ve seen something with him in it. The 83-year-old English actor has had an illustrious career, co-starring in such films as The Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Troy, Dr. Who, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, co-starred as the villain in 007 For Your Eyes Only and most recently, was seen quite a bit in the smash hit HBO show, Game of Thrones. Talk about a portfolio. I got front row seats to hear the thespian talk about his craft, his experiences, influences and more at Montreal Comiccon.
When the first Fantastic Beasts film came out in 2016, I expressed my enjoyment of the film overall but criticized the overall tone and story structure. The main plot, which saw Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander hunt down missing beasts in 1926 New York felt weak and uninspired. Remember that Central Park scene? I wish I couldn’t. But the film was set against a much more interesting B plot, one full of dark wizards, infiltrators and dark magical and it looks like that’s where the magic will happen in the film’s sequel, Crimes of Grindelwald. Warner Bros unveiled a teaser trailer today and the film looks much more like something out of the Wizarding World than the first one ever did!
