In a recent interview promoting his latest project, Shogun on Hulu, Hiroyuki Sanada admitted that he very much wants to be part of the MCU and Star Wars. On camera with Variety he said “Especially Star Wars. I’m a big fan of all of them.” Among Sanada’s many roles over his impressive career he has played Samurai, Yakusa, and even a few astronauts. So what would be the perfect MCU or Star Wars character for him to step into?
Marvel Cinematic Universe
Over zealous fans of the MCU will undoubtedly already be in the comment section, reminding us that Hiroyuki Sanada has already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some will note his brief and, sadly, finite appearance in Avengers Endgame. The more creative among them will cite his appearance opposite Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine, which is now officially part of the MCU multiverse.
Though these are technically correct, Marvel has never been shy about recasting actors as new characters if the hype is worth it. Of course, considering Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine for the 3rd Deadpool movie, he could definitely return to his character from The Wolverine as an earth 616 variant of Shingen Yashida. If this happens, I would love to see him get some actual powers this time, maybe in 616 he could get the powers of The Silver Samurai and be able to control tachyon fields.
Star Wars
While it is definitely tempting to cast Hiroyuki Sanada as a Jedi, given his acting pedigree and the influence samurai films had in the creation of the original Star Wars trilogy. However, I would love to see Sanada be given a role that’s not quite so obvious. The Star Wars universe is full of vibrant characters who are non-force users and I think Hiroyuki could have a lot of fun playing one of them. Perhaps some kind of rebel outlaw, smuggler, or bounty hunter would be a good fit, and give him a goofy sense of humor just to make him extra memorable.
Hiroyuki Sanada is one of those actors who is simply a joy to see on screen. He exudes presence and authority. He can make you fully invested in his world with a few words in his stoic voice. Regardless of where he lands in the MCU or Star Wars, you can bet he will be exceptional.
