Who Are The Mortis Gods in Star Wars? – ScreenHub Entertainment

Spoilers for Ahsoka

As I predicted, the Ahsoka series will be dabbling into the World Between Worlds, as seen in the ending of the fourth episode, Fallen Jedi. We have a whole primer on the world already written down but I wanted to take it one step further, on the off chance that we end up seeing the Mortis Gods in the Ahsoka show, specifically, The Son. So this is less a theory and more of a primer to make sure you have that information in case you’ve never watched The Clone Wars and Rebels.

In the third season of The Clone Wars, Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka got whisked away to the realm of Mortis, a region strong with the Force that seems to exist within its own plane of existence. During the day, the planet was lush and alive while at night, it became a hostile land of decay. On Mortis, they met The Father, The Son and the Daughter, three god-like beings who governed the Force itself. The Son represented the Dark Side, while the Daughter was the Light. Their father was the balance between the two children. This three-episode arc saw the Son attempt to break free of the Mortis realm with Anakin as his new apprentice, but thankfully this didn’t come to pass and our heroes got their minds wiped of the whole ordeal by the Father. Which is pretty convenient as The Son flooded Anakin’s mind with the future, chiefly his fall to the Dark Side and becoming Vader in an attempt to turn him to the Dark Side. With Anakin, the Son would’ve broken free and destroyed both the Sith and the Jedi and ruled the galaxy. The Son also killed Ahsoka, who was only brought back to life after the mortally wounded Daughter sacrificed herself by transferring her life essence to the young padawan, so Ahsoka is eternally bound to the concept of the Mortis gods.

Now, the only portal we know of in canon so far to get into the World Between Worlds was on Lothal, at the Jedi Temple. It was destroyed but Thrawn was able to rebuild part of the temple on his ship. On the original temple though, the only way to get into the gateway was governed by a mural depicting the Mortis Gods. This heavily implies that the Gods, and their realm that exists outside the confines of space and time, are the ones who govern the World Between Worlds. This idea is given more credit thanks to us knowing that Morai, a little green owl that’s the manifestation of The Daughter, was hanging out in the World Between Worlds when Ezra Bridger saved Ahsoka’s life in season four of Rebels. So if the Daughter can reside in the realm after death, the Son, a shapeshifter, could also very well find residency within the realm after Anakin killed him.

The three gods have been teased quite a few times in Ahsoka to be honest, chiefly in the first episode on the planet Arcana, when Ahsoka recovered the star map from the temple. On the walls, we can see what appear to be depictions of the Gods. Sure, they look radically different, but the left-hand placement of the mural aligns well with the Lothal mural. The use of the trinity knot also drives home the importance of the number three, which is also the witch’s number. Heck, even in that scene at the temple you can ever so fainly hear someone whispering to Ahsoka something about the Chosen One, I can’t tell for sure but it could be Sam Witwer, who voiced the Son in animation and is credited as additional voices in Ahsoka. This could imply that the Mortis Gods or the Son have had some sort of hand (no pun intended) in events transpiring.

I’m not sure if the Anakin we saw is the Anakin Skywalker or if it’s The Son using some trickery. The use of the Imperial March and the dark lightsaber make for some head-scratching, but on the off chance that the Son does show up in a future episode, now you have some cursory knowledge of what these gods are and you won’t be so blindsided if they do show up.
