Marvel has finally revealed the answer to a question that it’s been hinting at for years about Thunderbolts*, and the big surprise is that it was a marketing gimmick all along.
To be more specific, it is one of the best and most insane marketing gimmicks I’ve seen in a long time, and I love it. Just one week after its release, and with positive buzz about Thunderbolts* still swirling around the MCU fandom, Marvel has changed the name of their movie. I’ll hold you in suspense and give the unspoiled a moment to stop reading…
Major spoiler for Thunderbolts* below
According to all of Marvel’s social media, several theatrical posters, and one building-sized advertisement, the Thunderbolts* will now be known as *The New Avengers. This move mimics the team’s in-universe name change at the end of the film, and it’s a move so delightfully crazy that it feels right at home with a film about a dysfunctional group of unstable misfits.

While endlessly intriguing, this masterfully bonkers strategy begs the question: Are they really changing the name to *The New Avengers? The answer, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is no. This is solely a marketing tactic, and the official title of the film will remain Thunderbolts*. So don’t worry about what to search for when it comes out on Disney+ and physical media.
