New ‘Friday Night Lights’ Show In The Works At Universal – ScreenHub Entertainment

Early work on a new Friday Night Lights series is reportedly in the works over at Universal TV. Jason Katims, Pete Berg and Brian Grazer are confirmed to be involved, who were all producers and/or showrunners on the original five-season run, will be involved in the project should it move into production.

The project won’t be a reboot, nor will it be a legacy sequel, but rather a new story with new characters set in the same world that Kyle Chandler’s Coach Eric Taylor inhabits. The series, about the lives of high school football players and their families in the fictional Texas town of Dillon, was quite well received by fans and critics alike, with the show getting a few Emmy nominations along the way, as well as appearing on numerous “best of” lists.

As a fan of the original TV run, I am a bit curious about it, while at the same time holding reservations. The original show is just so good that it makes me wonder what the point of it all. While legacy characters aren’t confirmed, I do hope some come in from time to time to serve in cameo roles to allow us to catch up with them, chief among them Chandler’s Coach. However, a new cast and story would no doubt end up being compared to the original show, which in turn is based on the 2003 movie of the same name starring Billy Bob Thorton. On the flip side, I am relieved this new project isn’t a reboot, with different actors playing the same characters. So with that in mind, there’s certainly potential for new stories; the bar is just set so high already that it’ll be tough to reach the same level.

So if you’ve never seen the original Friday Night Lights, there’s a recommendation from me. You don’t have to be a fan of American football either to enjoy it; as the show dives more into the characters than the sport after the first episode, whereas the film was very much a chronicle of the sport.
