For The Imperium! ‘Warhammer 40,000’ A Go At Amazon – ScreenHub Entertainment

You may remember that two years ago, in December 2022, Henry Cavill teased that he was going to be involved in a series of projects revolving around the iconic Warhammer 40,000 universe. But the project would only see the light of day if Amazon and Games Workshop would come to a mutual agreement on how the project should be adapted. They had until December 2024 to come to an agreement on things like creative guidelines; if no such deal would be reached, then the project would dissolve.

Now, at the last minute no less, Amazon and Games Workshop have come to an agreement, paving the way for the Warhammer universe to be adapted. The company, which produces and oversees the insanely popular table-top game, issued the following statement:

“It’s official – Games Workshop and Amazon Studios have finalized their deal – the creative guidelines are nailed down, and we’re all set to bring Warhammer to the screen.

Henry Cavill will star in at least one project, as well as serve as a Kevin Fiege-style producer, overseeing the many projects that will be produced, from film to television. It’s unclear who Cavill will be playing or if the stories will be original or adaptations of previous Warhammer stories, of which there are countless now at this point. But Cavill has expressed interest in playing either a Primarch or a Captain-General.

Due to how long it took to iron out these details, Games Workshop did reiterate that it’ll still be another few years before we see the fruits of their labours, stating: “It might have taken a year but it was a year well spent! And what fun – sifting through the enormity of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, debating characters, story arcs and the thematic grit that underpins it all.”

Likewise, Cavill issued his own statement on the development on his Instagram:

“My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world. Together, we’ve been sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts. Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop. That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret. Watch this space, though — more to come in time!”

If you’ve never heard of Warhammer or are unfamiliar with the story, here’s a really quick, very basic primer, as going into too much detail would turn this article into an essay. The universe and story of Warhammer 40,000 (or Warhammer 40k) is set in the 41st millennium (hence the title) and involves the Empire’s Galactic military campaigns in the wake of an endless onslaught of aliens and other monstrosities across the cosmos. Despite being set in space, which would make it an easy sci-fi branding, it does pull from fantasy quite often, such as including orks, and supernatural magic in the universe.

Warhammer 40k is peak grimdark, meaning that the heroes and setting are pretty bleak, with war being the only constant. Things like advancements in civilization and education are stagnant or missing, and everything pretty much sucks for the fledging Earth and Empire. The Imperium also is fighting to eradicate the Xenos and other heretics that don’t align with their worldviews, but due to the lack of resources and the endless wave of aliens, humanity is doomed, suggesting that the fight isn’t for a “better tomorrow” but simply to take as many aliens down with them in the process. Due to this constant state of total war, it’s often hard to know who the hero is, as the Imperium is very openly fascist and cruel. This is personified by the slogan of the game, “In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war”. In terms of imagery and structure, the Imperium pulls heavily from Roman history.

Of course, helping the Imperium are the iconic Space Marines, otherwise known as Adeptus Astartes, engineered super-soldiers who are basically monks crossed with Captain America and Hulk, for lack of a better comparison. The Space Marines are broken up into 1000 chapters, such as Ultramarine, Blood Angels, and Space Wolves. Of course, this is just one aspect of the whole picture, as there are regular foot soldiers, inquisitors, politicians, and more within this universe. So it’s quite dense, to say the least.

It’ll be interesting to see which story will be made first, as it’ll have to be something to ease casual audiences into this overwhelming dense world. For my money, I think a smaller-scale story of the Inquisitor Eisenhorn would work well, instead of the action-heavy and frantic nature of the frontline stories. Time will tell though!
