A surprise treat awaited fans at the Xbox corner at this year’s Montreal Comiccon and that was a hands-on demo for the upcoming game from Square Enix/Crystal Dynamic, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I got to play the game for around thirty minutes and got a first-hand reaction to combat, puzzles and the tone of the latest entry in the franchise.
Part of the fun of any Comiccon is taking in all the sights and sounds and that includes the plethora of local artists who set up shop to show off their impressive artwork inspired by the films, shows and comics they’ve consumed over the years. One such artist is local boy Chris Moore, who specializes in drawing realistic and comic book inspired portraits of superheroes. Sony had a heavy presence at this year’s Montreal Comiccon and nothing was as anticipated as the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man game from Insomniac Games. The studio most recently worked on Sunset Overdrive on the Xbox and now they’re looking to bring your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man to the PlayStation this September.
The onset of 2018 brought its own set of disruptions that upset society’s normally peaceful façade. With such disorder came a surge of change that has yet to show any signs of slowing. Among these controversial conversations were political talks centred around a push for equality of all kinds – equality for racial minorities, for women, for the LGBT+ community. While none of these topics have emerged as novelty ideas, previously unfamiliar to humanity, their importance has been widely disregarded throughout history by people in positions of power. Politicians, the media, and the big businesses alike have turned a blind eye to the most marginalized groups in society; yet, as this new era dawns, many are determined to give prominence to those whose lives are too often neglected.

HBO’s Game of Thrones is without a doubt, the most popular show on television. In fact, it’s one of the most popular shows in television history. It’s full of layered characters with complex backstories, intricate narratives and speculator action that is willing to kill off anyone it sees fit. Oh – and there’s also massive dragons. It’s a land full of magic and wonder; despite the grounded approach to politics and character interactions, but it’s those latter points that draw from the real world. Disney’s is going full steam ahead on its live action remakes. We’ve seen hits like The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast in recent years and have The Lion King, Aladdin and Tim Burton’s Dumbo on the horizon. But as the remakes continue, it’s clear that Disney is clearly focusing the greatest hits from its catalog. And while that’s likely the best move financially, as more people will likely go see something they enjoy already, I think Disney should go deep into the vault and pull The Black Cauldron from out of the darkness.
