Denis Villeneuve says ‘Dune’ Star Zendaya Could Direct – ScreenHub Entertainment

The Emmy winning actress Zendaya has taken the entertainment world by storm over the past few years. She has gained numerous acting and producing credits across film, cable TV, and streaming services. Now Oscar nominated director of Dune, Denis Villeneuve, has endorsed her next potential career move, into the director’s chair.

While speaking with fellow director Stephen Spielberg on an episode of the podcast The Director’s Cut, Denis Villeneuve remarked on Zendaya’s interest in what happened behind the camera, saying “She’s so clever, but shows she’s brilliant and her strong presence, and she was always on set even when she was not shooting. Just sitting between [cinematographer] Greig [Fraser] and I listening, listening and listening. So I would not be surprised that one day we learn that she wants to go behind [the camera].”

Zendaya has also expressed an interest in directing. In a 2023 video interview with Elle magazine, she said “If I weren’t acting, I’d be… I think within the industry I would be a director.” Later in the interview she added “[I want to] direct one day. To direct a film, hopefully more than just one, but just doing it. The first step to actually doing something yourself is not an easy step to take, so hopefully I can get over the fear.”

With Zendaya’s combination of drive, talent, and professionalism, it probably won’t be long before we get to see her take that step. At a relatively young age, she is positioned to become a major player in the industry. I, for one, can’t wait to see her follow in the tradition of great female directors like Greta Gerwig, Ava DuVernay, and Olivia Wilde.
