There is a New ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ Trailer, Here’s Our Breakdown – ScreenHub Entertainment

In 1991 James Cameron brought us two of the most iconic sci-fi films of all time. The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day raised the bar of what the public should expect from their science fiction blockbusters and spawned a number of sequels that are, shall we say, less than satisfying. A disappointed fandom has been craving more of that original James Cameron mechanical magic ever since as, like Alien, there are more bad movies than good movies in this franchise.

28 years later yet another sequel, Terminator: Dark Fate, looms on the horizon. With Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton returning to star, and James Cameron himself producing, Terminator: Dark Fate could be the sequel we deserve. Let’s take a closer look at the latest trailer for this new installment in the Terminator franchise.

The Terminator Vs. Sarah Connor

Since the end of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, we have seen very little of what happened to Sarah Connor after she saved the world. This is unfortunate, as Linda Hamilon’s portrayal of the hardened paramilitary mamma-bear was arguably the best thing about that film. Thankfully, it looks like Sarah Connor is back and just as badass as ever.

He’s Still The Terminator? Really?

Arnold’s T-800, the unstoppable killing machine who’s only purpose is to track and kill humans, is looking a little old. For a total of six(ish) films Arnold Schwarzenegger has returned to play the time-travelling machine sent to destroy and/or save the future of humanity. Across those six films, writers have had to come up with more and more contrived explanations for why a perfectly designed kill-bot seems to age like a human.

Arnold isn’t revealed until midway through this Terminator: Dark Fate trailer, but when he does one thing is apparent. Rather than attempt to pass a 72 year old man off as the epitome of efficient robotics design, Schwarzenegger seems to be leaning into the rugged old man look. Will the writers of Dark Fate come up with something halfway believable to convince us this is still the overpowered automaton we know and love?

Yet Another New Terminator

Unfortunately, we don’t get to see much of the new Terminator in this trailer. From what we do see, it looks like actor Gabriel Luna will be playing a T-X style Terminator (first seen in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) with a solid mechanical internal skeleton and a liquid metal outer layer. Traditionally, as the franchise has gone on, each new Terminator has been given some new abilities. It will be interesting to see what the writers have dreamed up this time.

Brains Vs. Brawn

It is easily argued that The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day became iconic due to the more cerebral elements in their stories, however, the series as a whole is an action franchise. This latest Dark Fate trailer hits that nail right on the proverbial head. With big guns, explosive combat, and what looks like a prison riot, it is pretty safe to assume that fans will not suffer a lack of human versus robot action. It remains to be seen whether the moments between that action will have the same social and emotional punch that gave the original two films such staying power.

Promotional trailers can be tricky things. They are molded and crafted to advertise the very best aspects of a film, and rarely present an honest idea of what a movie will be. With that said, it is really hard not to get excited seeing Linda Hamilton snarl angrily at a stoic  Arnold Schwarzenegger.
